Not Quite

It was an early morning. I was going to work. Tired. Trying to keep my eyes open. I started singing a song that I had recently written and recorded for my fiance. It was working: my energy was gradually increasing...

BAM! I was hit. Let me rephrase that: It was hit. "It" was a bird that once had a life. Poor little creature flew smack dab in the center of my windshield at over 50 miles per hour...

In shock. I was, not the bird. The bird had to be dead. As I stared at his bloody feathers glued to my window, I wondered about his family. Yes, I sense that it was a male bird, though I haven't a clue. But they're going to miss him...

I don't even know what kind of bird he was. You'd think he was a sparrow because that's almost all you see around my neck of the woods. But he was too large to be a sparrow. I'm thinking dove. A gray dove.

I began wondering what he was doing when our lives collided. Was he showing off for his friends? Trying to impress a girl? Going for a stroll? Perhaps he was on his way to work. Tired. Trying to keep his eyes open...

What if he had just gotten a promotion? What if he was going to meet with his honey for their anniversary? What if... he just got the news that his new baby chicks were just hatched??

This turned into a rather sad morning. Whatever he was doing, he didn't quite make it past me...

I was awake. Inevitably.
